Practice. Practice. Practice. Lacking any innate skills or any in-depth knowledge of how locks work, practice, practice, practice is the only option available if I ever want to pick locks in a respectable amount of time (like...ever). So - late at night / very early in the morning I sit at the kitchen table wearing thick reading glasses and pick, pick, pick away at padlocks. I am only just now beginning to understand what I am feeling through the lock pick and the tension wrench. I am at the very very beginning of not over-setting pins.. It was just earlier this morning ~ 2:00AM EST ~ that I finally gained some insight into the Master Lock No 3 (Middle above). The result is that now I can open it consistently.. You might notice that the right-most lock (Master Lock No 140) remains
unopened. That's because it has security pins in it (called spool pins)
and I am completely flummoxed by them.. I just bought a cutaway practice lock with spool pins in it from Sparrows. I'm hoping that being able to see the spool pins in action will provide me with some insight that will help me open the 140 and other locks like it... For some perspective - all of the locks above are considered beginning locks. They are what experienced lock pickers suggest to people like me who are just starting out.. So - it's not like this is any great accomplishment.. Still.. a couple weeks ago I could not do this, and progress, no matter how small, is still progress. And --- it's like my Dharma Teacher Doe Bom Kun Sunim said when he assessed my aptitude for the Dharma "It's better to have persistence than intelligence." I think he meant "You're a dunce, but you're stubborn. It could work out." Hah. |
