I did my first marathon last night, from 6:00-9:00 EST. The School of Visual Arts in NYC hosted an online drawing marathon for free with a wonderful teacher, Peter Hristoff, leading us. The format was really fast paced - 30 to 90 second drawings. There was no time to go back and correct or obsess over the arc of a line or how shitty you thought your drawing was.. No. It was draw, draw, draw, draw... The invite for the marathon suggested a list of supplies - soft pencils and graphite pencils and LOTS of paper (we ended up doing over 100 drawings in 180 minutes). I am a rookie to real art classes so I bought all of the suggested supplies... It turned out for me that the fat water-soluble 9B graphite crayon worked the best.. The pencils required sharpening too often which cut into the fast-paced drawing time.. Here's the explanation of the format from the SVA website: ...encourage participants to work in an uninhibited, loose manner. With poses rarely longer than a minute or two, the fast pace breaks down barriers of self-consciousness, allowing us to draw for the sake—and joy—of drawing. The three hours flew by. I was done in by the end.. in a good way. A word about the instructor - what a sweet, generous man. I loved how he ran things and how gentle and gracious he was with the hundreds of participants... A big thanks to my friend P for the suggestion..
