Doff woke me up yesterday morning to tell me my son-in-law had called. I jumped out of bed (well.. sort of..) called him back and unexpectedly, instead of talking to my son-in-law, I had the best conversation with my Grandson. It was a first. Turns out he was in the car with his Mom, Dad, and younger Sister on the way to Home Depot to purchase a screwdriver... He and I had a long, rambling discussion about things that are Very Important to three-year old men - trucks, the carriages at Home Depot which are like vehicles with pretend steering wheels, planes, helicopters, the weather, breakfast, whether I had Spiderman on my TV, boo-boos (his elbow, my toe), doctor visits, PJ's, his sweet dog Pearly, how good a driver his DaDa is.. all sorts of things. We even practiced speaking Bostonian for a little bit "HiHowAhhYah??" We laughed and we joked. Some times I said things that registered with him as improbable and he would say "Are you joking again Papa?" (apparently he is onto me already...). He is getting good at the art of the improbable himself. When I asked if his little Sister was driving the car to Home Depot, he said "Yes" - and then giggled.. At the end of our conversation, I told him that I loved him to bits. He replied wistfully "Yeahhhh.." The call lasted for over twenty five minutes - remarkable for a three year-old. An amazing way to start the day..... ~ |
