Has The Washington Post Not Been Paying Attention?

Abbey of the Genesee

In Wednesday's edition of the Washington Post, there was a breathless little op-ed piece entitled "When did religious belief become an excuse to discriminate?" When I read just the title I thought "Like forever?!?" It's astounding that the question had to be asked in the first place.

I went and looked up books about the topic of Christianity and power.. One of the books I found, which I got from the Library, was "Constantine's Sword - The Church and the Jews." The book is written by a former Paulist priest, James Carroll. He writes in an early chapter:

"... so we can say that Auschwitz, when seen in the links of causality, reveals that the hatred of Jews has been no incidental anomaly but a central action of Christian history, reaching to the core of Christian character. Jew hatred's perversion of the Gospel message launched a history, in other words, that achieved its climax in the Holocaust, an epiphany presented so starkly it can no longer be denied."

Yikes!

None other than St Jerome, back in the Golden Era of Christianity's cultural domination penned, "There is no cruelty in regard for God's honour."

Ahem...

It's puzzling that the Post didn't know about the Church's past.. a past that replays itself over and over again..
