The Becoming Is Beautiful Too

The Sea Queen devours everything she touches (which, as you can imagine, is a source of great joy as well as deep sorrow for Her). She seems to especially love dining on boats. And so - they are hauled out of Her Majesty's grasp every year or so for hull patches, shiny new sacrificial anodes, and gallons and gallons of fresh paint brushed and sprayed on to try and protect them from Her appetites.

Certainly, when they are done with their rehabs, the boats are gleaming - beautiful - like when the Fishing Vessel America got spiffed with a new bow insignia over a field of shiny black -

There is much to be said though, for the in-between stages as well, when hulls are ground raw with sanders and great swaths of primer are brushed on in jagged lines. Often, these in-progress hulls display such lovely un-selfconscious marks that you'd swear that they could hold their own in a modern art museum..

Like so much in life, these intermediate states of beauty are fleeting and are almost always not appreciated for what they really are.

I count myself lucky when I come face to face with them...
