Wherever Have These People Been Living?

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that last week on Monday Night Football,  24 year-old Damar Hamlin, a defensive safety for the Buffalo Bills suffered a cardiac arrest subsequent to a tackle he made during the game. The young man had to be resuscitated twice - a defibrillator was used on him on the field while administering CPR. He had a pulse - but could not breathe on his own.

Thankfully - he is making what is by all accounts, a remarkable recovery. Doctors are saying that his mental faculties may be largely intact. He can move his hands and feet.

The tragic episode has given rise to the predictable hand-wringing on the left about the violence and racist nature of the game of football.. The op-ed I read on the topic this morning was in the Washington Post and was titled "Why is America addicted to this violent and brutal game?"

Ahem.

Where, I dearly want to know, have people who write such nonsense been living all their lives?  We are America. We are an enterprise built on slavery and slaughter. We are one of the most war-like people on the planet. We spend more on weaponry than all of China, India, Britain, Russia, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and South Korea combined. We prioritize unfettered weapon ownership over the safety of our babies.

Why would we not love our gladiator sports? To ask the question "Why is America addicted to this violent and brutal game?" is to display a staggering ignorance about the true nature of The Empire we all live in.
