It's important for my mental health to get out of the house as often as I can and get to the woods or the sea, so yesterday I spent some gasoline to travel the eleven miles to the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary to photograph birds.

It was a good day for it - chilly - intermittent breeze - intermittent cloud cover. The cloud cover was especially welcome - restraining the sunlight from blowing everything out with its brilliance.

The sanctuary trails were a mixture of slush, mud, and ice. It was definitely one of those "When you look, look. When you walk, walk." kind of days. The icy stretches would have either made me turn around and go back to Ralphie or be carried out on a stretcher after taking a header. Fortunately I was wearing some removable cleats (Hillsound Freesteps6 Crampons) that allowed walking on even the hardest, slipperiest ice.

Due to the snow cover in the woods, the birds were ravenous. Everyone came out for the sunflower seeds I was leaving in small piles by the side of the trail. Even the bigger birds like Bluejays, Cardinals, Crows, Grackles and Redwing Blackbirds who would otherwise wait until I was far from a seed cache came out to dine while I was still relatively close by.

The Chickadees, Nuthatches and Tufted Titmice - well - they were their usual bold little selves.. flittering all about me whenever I stopped to do something.
