Every day at the Parker River Wildlife Refuge
the Sea Queen decorates the shoreline
with her delicate, almost-not-there,
landscapes of "Hills Beyond Hills."
The Sea Queen is masterful
beyond mastery, never
misplacing a line
or a single dot
of shading.

I asked her once why she persisted day
after day to create such masterpieces
when they would only be swept away
by the hem of her blue satin gown
on the next rising tide, or
blown away by Sister
Wind, or trampled
by the unobservant
visitor to Her
Dharma Hall.

"Come close and I will tell you, sweet boy."
I went to the waterline and bent down
to listen. She whispered
her one-word reply:
"Practice."

And then, with a laugh, she soaked
my sneakers with her salty gown.
