The BA.2 variant of Omicron is said to be 1.5 times more infectious than the plain old Omicron variant (which has an R0 of 7). That means (I think - I could be wrong - I'm not an expert like Joe Rogan or Aaron Rodgers) that the BA.2 variant has an R0 of around 10 which puts it in the same league as measles. I've talked to a few young, fit, slender people and they seem to be taking a laissez-faire approach to the new variant - especially if they are fully boosted.. Basically it's the "If I get infected, I get infected. It won't be serious." philosophy. When they try to convince me, an old fatty, to join them in their re-entrance into the new normal, I respectfully decline. I think the "whatever happens, happens" practice allows for the continuing mutation of the virus, to which the virus responds with "Yeah man!" It just may not work out so well for humanity though. Also - asymptomatic infections could make young slenders unwitting sources of deadly infection for old fatties. I don't blame the youngsters for yielding to the virus. It's COVID's fault. |
