Two days ago, I went for a walk at the Audubon
Wildlife Sanctuary. I was besieged by tiny
hungry birds whenever I stopped to
photograph something. One tiny
creature, a Chickadee, was
so hungry and so bold
that (s)he landed
right on my
camera
and
looked at
me as if to say,
"We're pretty hungry here
today. Do you have any food for
us?" Sadly, I didn't have any seeds for
my little friends that day. The following day
though, I laid on a big ziploc bag of fat black
sunflower seeds. I went to several places where
lots of my friends hang out and dumped piles
of the seeds on out-of-the-way rocks and
deadfalls. No sooner did the seeds
get portioned out, the first
customer appeared,
a sprightly little
Chickadee.
Once he
found
the seeds,
his friends noticed
and then they came,
in droves, to dine on the offerings.
They swooped in, snatched a seed and
brought it up to a nearby branch. Holding
the seed with their feet, they pecked the shell open
and devoured the kernel.. Over and over
again. They were so hungry and so
intent on the food, they didn't
seem to mind that I took
some pictures of them.
